In this task, students will explore the idea of fractional pieces by looking at parts of a whole shape.
Throughout their exploration, students will interact with key concepts of symmetry, fractions, and area in a visual way. By folding and/or cutting the visuals, students will use the unique characteristics and properties of shapes to create the basis of their fractional reasoning.
As students experiment with each of these visuals they can make conjectures about how to add fractional pieces using visual proofs to defend their thinking.
