Neighborhood Numbers (K-5) [video]

As you are walking with your child in your neighborhood you can have a mathematical conversation about the numbers on the houses and apartments around you.

You can ask questions such as:

  • What is that number? How do you say it?
  • Are the numbers getting bigger or smaller? By how much? 
  • What do you think the next number will be? Why? 
  • What do you notice about the numbers on the other side of the street?
  • Do you notice any patterns in the numbers? 
  • Pick a number. Which side of the street would the number be on?
  • Where are the even numbers? Odd? 
  • How do they increase? 
  • Is there a starting point?
  • Are the numbers similar on a street parallel? Perpendicular?
  • If you were a postal worker, how would you organize the mail to deliver it?

EXTENSION: Sketch your own block of houses, apartments, or buildings. Draw them on both sides of the street. How would you number your houses, apartments, or buildings? What would you name the street?
