The middle grades are an important time for students to deepen and extend their understanding of numbers and operations. As students work with fractions, decimals, and integers and begin to reason with ratios, rates, and proportional relationships, they have opportunities to make powerful connections across mathematics.

In this interactive workshop, participants will experience research-informed, mindset-rich approaches that invite students to notice patterns, visualize ideas, make connections, and share different ways of thinking. We will explore operations with fractions, decimals, and integers, along with proportional reasoning, ratios, rates, and the expanding number system, including irrational numbers.

Throughout the workshop, participants will explore ways to move beyond rules and procedures by engaging students in reasoning, making connections, and making sense of the mathematics. Visual and creative approaches help students see relationships between ideas, develop flexible strategies, and build confidence in their own mathematical thinking.

These middle-grades ideas provide an important bridge to algebra. When students have opportunities to reason, make connections, and approach problems in different ways, they develop a stronger foundation for the more abstract mathematics that comes next.

Participants will leave with practical activities and strategies they can use to create engaging mathematics classrooms that invite students to be curious, take risks, make connections, and see themselves as capable and creative mathematics learners.

Participants will learn from Dr Boaler, Cathy Williams, the youcubed team, and one another. Participants will leave with practical activities and strategies they can use to create engaging mathematics classrooms that invite students to be curious, take risks, make connections, and see themselves as capable and creative mathematics learners.

The workshop begins at 9:00 am each day and ends at 3:00 pm each day.

Participant Testimonials

"This workshop will affirm those hidden beliefs you previously only held in your heart regarding students and learning… it will allow you to put them into action!"

"I feel re-energized and hopeful about helping maths teachers reframe their goals for math instruction and to dive deeper into math with their students."

"Actually experiencing the struggle that we want our students to experience. I also love having these activities that have the low floor and high ceiling opportunities."
