Overview

The transition from number sense to operations is a powerful moment in students’ mathematical development. When learners are invited to notice patterns, make connections, visualize ideas, and share different ways of thinking, they develop a deeper and more flexible understanding of mathematics.

In this interactive workshop, participants will experience research-informed, mindset-rich strategies that help students move beyond memorizing procedures and toward reasoning with confidence and curiosity. Together, we will explore meaningful ways to engage learners across the number system, including whole numbers, integers, fractions, and decimals.

Participants will investigate how visual, creative, and connected approaches—grounded in research on mathematical learning—can open mathematics to more students, strengthen understanding of operations, and help students see themselves as capable mathematics learners. These connections are essential for success in arithmetic and provide an important foundation for later learning in algebra.

Participants will learn from Dr Boaler, Cathy Williams, the youcubed team, and one another. Participants will leave with practical activities, instructional strategies, and new ways to create classrooms where students are encouraged to take risks, value multiple approaches, and develop flexible, connected mathematical thinking.

The workshop begins at 9:00 am each day and ends at 3:00 pm each day.

Participant Testimonials

"This workshop will affirm those hidden beliefs you previously only held in your heart regarding students and learning… it will allow you to put them into action!"

"I feel re-energized and hopeful about helping maths teachers reframe their goals for math instruction and to dive deeper into math with their students."

"Actually experiencing the struggle that we want our students to experience. I also love having these activities that have the low floor and high ceiling opportunities."
